FL Studio mono phase: Fruity Stereo Shaper, mono check, Mixer routing, then residual spectral repair
FL Mixer headphones and Fruity Stereo Shaper can hide cancel. Master mono fold, polarity invert, Playlist nudge, and honest Sends come first. PHIXER belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, Utility mono, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What FL Studio mono-phase failure sounds like
- Fruity Stereo Shaper looks huge, mono check thins. Separation and Mid/Side moves shimmer in headphones, then Mixer mono fold eats body.
- Hard L/R Mixer pans on layered samples. Playlist stacks feel wide; phone speakers cancel Mid.
- Stereo routed sends without a mono proof. Reverb and delay returns fight dry on the Master.
- Patcher / parallel racks. Dry + parallel cancel when you finally flip mono on the Mixer track or Master.
- Fine in Mixer headphones, broken on export or social upload. See YouTube / social mono.
Fast FL Studio mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- On the Master Mixer track (or a monitor track), enable mono (stock utility / Fruity Balance Width 0% style fold, or a dedicated mono plugin). Toggle it.
- A/B critical Mixer tracks and Sends with mono engaged. Note kick body, 808 Mid, vocal chest, stereo Shaper beds.
- Solo pairs: layered kicks, vocal + stereo delay, Synth + unison stack routed stereo.
- Optional: correlation meter on Master, then stereo again so you do not mix only in mono.
Order of operations in FL Studio (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity invert on one path
Use stock invert / phase flip on one Mixer insert when body returns immediately on dual-mic, dual-sample, or parallel Patcher chains. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small delay align (Playlist or delay plugin)
Nudge the secondary Playlist clip or use a short delay (samples/ms) to match the hero. Do not use Haas L/R delay as "width" before mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Fruity Stereo Shaper honesty
Stereo Shaper Mid/Side and separation tools change Side energy. They are not polarity repair. If mono dies with Shaper on and lives with Shaper off, simplify the Shaper first.
4. Mixer routing and Send returns
Stereo Sends to reverb/delay often cancel Mid when summed. Mono-check Master with Sends muted vs open. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical returns. Related: stereo reverb mono.
5. Unison / layered Playlist stacks
Multiple similar kicks, 808s, or vocals in the Playlist are classic cancel sources. Invert one, align one, or delete the weaker layer before width plugins. Related: sample stacks.
6. Only then residual spectral repair
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after polarity, delay, Shaper honesty, and Send hygiene, PHIXER can help. Prove with mono A/B.
FL Studio path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fruity Stereo Shaper on Group | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass/simplify Shaper; center lows |
| Layered Playlist kicks/808s | Body cancels on Master mono | Invert one; align; remove weaker layer |
| Stereo Send returns | Dry+wet hollow Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return lows |
| Patcher parallel | Dry + parallel cancel | Polarity; align; simplify parallel |
| Export / social fold | Fine in Mixer, hollow on phone | Master mono habit; YouTube mono |
FL Studio checklist (to export)
1. Keep a Master mono toggle
Make mono-check muscle memory before Export or upload. Do not trust Mixer headphones alone.
2. Audit Stereo Shaper under mono
Bypass Shaper during the check. If mono recovers, the Shaper settings are the problem, not "needing more width."
3. Audit Sends muted vs open
Find which stereo return eats Mid. Lower Send level or simplify the return.
4. Re-check after Playlist consolidates
Consolidate and freeze change timing relationships. Invert and mono again after you commit layers.
When PHIXER helps in FL Studio
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo.
- Polarity, delay align, Shaper honesty, and Send levels are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid.
- You are not using it to replace Invert, Playlist nudge, or to rescue extreme Stereo Shaper settings.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shaper on = thin mono | Bypass/simplify Shaper | Width tool, not polarity fix |
| Layered kicks cancel | Invert; align; delete weaker | Dual-path sample fight |
| Send open hollows Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return | Dry+wet fold |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / sample choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned Master yet.
- The fix is obviously Invert, Playlist nudge, quieter Send, or simpler Stereo Shaper.
- You want PHIXER to make the project wider or "more FL." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Master mono → invert dual paths → Playlist/delay align → honest Fruity Stereo Shaper → Send hygiene → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → mono again before Export.
